- Are you a professional working with young people with SEN?
- Would you like to learn more about how young people with SEN learn?
- Would you like support with planning and delivering effective provisions for pupils with complex needs?
I have successfully managed and led various educational settings, including SEND provisions for pupils with a range of neuro-diverse conditions, special educational needs and physical disabilities. I have an in-depth understanding of child development and how children learn, which underpins my decisions when planning bespoke provisions for all children in my care, including the ones who do not follow the path of typical development. I have developed bespoke pathways for pupils on the Pre-Formal and Semi-Formal curriculums, using EQUALS, Routes for Learning, the Cherry Garden resources, the Development Matters Guidance, as well as the research findings from L. Staves, S. Mosley, F. Longhorn, L. England and other practitioners.
The key to a successful provision is a fun, meaningful and practical approach, based on the communication and developmental levels of the child.
Are they still exploring and learning through actions and interactions? Are they able to understand pictorial representations? Can they understand abstract concepts? Are they competent language users or do they need pictorial support?
I can help you answer those questions and create fun and meaningful provisions for children with complex needs.
I will ensure that the curriculum meets the individual needs of the children, by focusing on developing key skills such as self regulation, communication, ability to self-occupy and use essential life skills, as well as basic Numeracy and Literacy skills.
I will check that the learning environment is suitable for the children’s needs and is not over-stimulating. I will help establish useful habits and routines, to promote independence and self-esteem. I will plan lessons together with staff, ensuring that new concepts are securely linked to prior knowledge (in line with the child’s schematic thinking) and there are no gaps in teaching and learning, avoiding abstract concepts. We will make sure that learning outcomes are purposeful with clear implementation strategies. I will encourage using deliberate practice as much as possible, so that staff feel confident and able to reflect on their own practice. The whole process will be implemented over a few weeks, so it is effective, resulting in improved practice and pupil outcomes. I will offer support and guidance afterwards.
